Tourist season

CLIMATE
The Galapagos can be visited all year round. There are two seasons:

Garua’s season runs from mid-June to mid-October (more or less): the cold Humboldt current enters the island and makes the water colder (about 17 degrees Celsius, a wetsuit is required), cloudy days and light drizzle. This makes the climate cooler – so don’t expect every sunny day. Cooler weather for hiking and no need for air conditioning or fans at night and almost no mosquitoes. Cooler water brings more plankton and wildlife; it’s the best time of year to spot whales during boat trips.

The hot season is from November to mid-May (approximately): the days can be very hot (over 30 degrees) and the water is warm due to the entry of the Panama current into the islands. During this season, no wetsuit is needed and the days are sunnier. This is the perfect season, if you want to warm up from the northern hemisphere winter! Because of the tropical rains in this season, all the islands are greener.

Between these two seasons, it’s a time of transition where you can have a bit of both!

Customs formalities

No visa is required for stays of less than 90 days. You must travel with a passport that is still valid for 6 months after your stay.

Health

The islands have health posts where you can receive all types of care. However, you have to pay on the spot and then ask for reimbursement from your health insurance company.

We advise you to check whether your insurance covers medical expenses in the countries you visit and if not, to seek reimbursement. Repatriation insurance is compulsory.

Currency / Credit Cards

Dollars are accepted everywhere. Credit cards are accepted at all ATMs (visa, mastercard, diners, american express). The ATM commission is between 5 and 10usd.

Tips

In the service sector, it is normal to leave a tip when you are happy with the service. Between 5 and 10% of the value of the service is usual.

Physical preparation

Whenever you travel, remember to keep fit. Even for “Discovery” trips, by preparing yourself physically you will adapt more easily and enjoy your discoveries (especially during possible diving and snorkeling sessions).
